Animal Shelter
nesTled in The hills oF FryeBurG , me is a small animal shelter known for its compassion , expertise , and dedication . Harvest Hills Animal Shelter has deep roots in our community , going back decades . In the late 1940 ’ s a local animal welfare advocate began rescuing and rehoming animals out of her home after she discovered they were being abandoned at the local dump . Many years later , this pioneer sold a portion of her property with the intention of establishing an animal shelter .
Our mission is simple ; to create new beginnings for as many cats and dogs as possible .
In 1992 Harvest Hills Animal Shelter offi cially opened its doors ! Since 1992 , they have placed close to 20,000 animals into loving homes . Harvest Hills Animal Shelter services 20 towns in Western Maine , focusing on our local community ’ s needs . Instead of importing , the animals in their care are town strays , or local personal surrenders due to a multitude of reasons . Regardless of the situation , they strive to provide both animals and humans with the utmost respect and dignity .
Harvest Hills has a reputation for going above and beyond for the animals in their care . Each animal receives preventative care , spay / neutering , microchips , and so much more . They work closely with local vets to complete health exams , and it is common for animals to receive dental treatments or specialty surgeries before adoption . Each cat and dog is nurtured and enjoys the company of volunteers throughout the day . They assist local Animal Control Offi cers in the ambition of ending overpopulation , neglect , and abuse .
Shelter staff are devoted to completing families and giving these cats and dogs a second chance . They care for the animals , for the owners , and for the future . Harvest Hills is more than an animal shelter , it ’ s a community . They forge bonds with adopters and have a loyal following within the area .
Fundraisers like Freezing for a Reason at the Bridgton Winter Carnival and an Annual Golf and Tennis Tournament at Bridgton Highlands are a lighthearted way to connect with their neighbors while supporting their mission .
Harvest Hills Animal Shelter also has community programs focused on keeping animals with their families . A yearly rabies clinic allows access to important preventative care , and the spay / neuter voucher program allows families to responsibly access expensive surgery . Not only does this support population control and take a strain off other resources , but it helps prevent scary medical issues that can arise in unaltered pets . This program is available all year long to any residents of the 20 towns they service . HHAS experienced animal care team is always available to provide advice , resources , and guidance .
Most importantly , our staff and volunteers facilitate love .
If you can ’ t adopt or volunteer , you can support Harvest Hills Animal Shelter by shopping at their thrift store ! Nine Lives Thrift Store is located directly next to the shelter in Fryeburg , and 100 % of the proceeds fi nance the shelter . Find anything from collectibles , antiques , and furniture , to books , clothing , and pet supplies ! Each week they accept community donations on Wednesdays and cycle new items onto the fl oor daily . Check it out and you ’ re sure to leave with a treasure !
